We are Transition Walthamstow

Towards a happy, healthy and resilient Walthamstow

Transition Waltham Forest initially launched back in 2008. However, members migrated to other projects including the very successful Transition Leytonstone in 2009, with Transition Walthamstow forming in 2011.

Despite members’ best efforts, though, the group went into hibernation. You can find out more about the group in our History page.

Fast forward to March 2022, two years of a devastating global pandemic had brought home to all of us the importance of community and connection. While the recent floods in Walthamstow have demonstrated that climate change is real and it’s here. And it’s time to do something about it.

After a couple of initial meetings, it was decided to bring Transition Walthamstow back to life. The aim of the group is to create a resilient Walthamstow in the face of a drastically changed world

.

We want to build a strong community that allows us all to transition to a low-carbon lifestyle. We can only do this if we work together – collective action over individual responsibility. How we do this depends on what Walthamstow needs.

We hope to learn and share what we can about climate change, how it will affect us all and what we can do about it. We aim to do this by working with local organisations to create a network of climate-friendly businesses so local people can make informed decisions about where they spend their money.

We want to share knowledge via skills sessions such as insulating your home, switching to greener energy, growing your own food, moving to a low-carbon diet, moving away from car dependency. But we also want to create a sense of community in Walthamstow, a place where we can all get together to share ideas, food and companionship.

So whether you are passionate about local food production, a better street environment, improved home energy efficiency, a healthier local economy, or have any other ideas, we are the people to talk to.

Everyone is welcome to join Transition Walthamstow. We want to build a diverse and inclusive group that reflects what Walthamstow looks like. A group that has all kinds of skills and knowledge to share.

Our regular meetings take place at 7.30pm on the second Monday of the month at Ye Olde Rose & Crown pub, 53 Hoe Street. Come along to find out more!

The Transition Network is about being a citizen rather than a consumer – an agent, not a commodity. The article How to be a hands-on citizen, on the Psyche website, has some interesting advice. There’s more on the citizen story versus the consumer and subject stories in the BBC article Citizen future: Why we need a new story of self and society.
